Structures as Shape
Wei Yan

"From 1920 on, Mondrian had struggled to correct the misconception that his art could be characterized as geometric. He insisted again and again that he did not work according to a system, but rather that intuition served as his sole creative guide. ". (From the catalogue Piet Mondrian, 1872-1944, Leonardo Arte, Milan, 1994, p. 295)

This work is to analyze the structure of Mondrian`s Broadway Boogie Woogie. Redraw the original painting with a CAD program to discover the basic vocabulary of the composition. Distinguish between individual shapes and shapes that can be grouped in blocks or compound objects. Suggest hypothesis regarding the laws of composition: the rhythm of the grid, the rhythm of color. Represent the multiple readings that can be made of the composition by means of a layer structure.

I built the Broadway Boogie-Woogie Generator using AutoLISP and Dialog Control Language (DCL). You can download the .lsp and .dcl source files and run them in your AutoCAD. You can define some parameters to create your own Broadway Boogie-Woogie. The program can also generate Broadway Boogie-Woogie randomly by using a random function. Here are some defined and random results.
